Year 3 Volcano and Earthquake Workshop

Year 3 had an exciting visit from Dr Nick Geary, from UTC, today where they found out about volcanoes and earthquakes.  The workshop was a hands-on experience so the children could understand about the layers of the Earth, tectonic plates, volcanoes and earthquakes.

The children used a model of the Earth and nectarines to understand that around the Earth is a crust and inside the Earth is the core.

They learnt that the Earth’s crust is made up of plates that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.  When these move they can cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The most enjoyable experiment was using an oreo biscuit to show what happens when the tectonic plates move in different directions and how this can create valleys, mountain ranges and volcanic eruptions.
